Twitter introduces pricing graphs for $BTC and other major ticker codes

twitter chart

Twitter has just made it easier for its users to view prices and price movements of Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH) and major stock ticker codes.

The Twitter Business account announced on 21 December that when users tweet the symbol of a major stock, exchange-traded fund, or cryptocurrency with a “$” in front of it, the clickable link that appears will now takes users to search that include pricing graphs for those symbols.

This new feature is an update to the pre-existing “$Cashtags” function. It appears to increase Twitter’s utility to traders and investors and may serve to keep users from straying outside the Twitter ecosystem.

Currently, BTC and ETH are the only two cryptocurrencies with price charts available on Twitter, but Twitter Business said that it expects to expand its coverage of symbols and improve user experience in the coming weeks.

The price charts on Twitter also include a “View on Robinhood” link that takes users to the Robinhood site page for that asset. A number of Twitter users expressed their distrust of Robinhood in response, although it should be noted that no partnership between Twitter and Robinhood has been officially announced.

Only problem is, Robinhood scammed everyone during The Gamestop Pump. We won’t forget this.

In other relevant news, speculation emerged earlier in December that Twitter was considering launching its own cryptocurrency, dubbed “Twitter Coin”, which may be used for payments. This speculation began on 4 December, following an announcement by CEO Elon Musk that provided insight into the potential future of Twitter, including the possibility of incorporating cryptocurrency-based payments.

Twitter has been very hot and cold on its approach to blockchain and web3 integration, this is unlikely to change given CEO Musk’s own volatile relationship with crypto in particular Bitcoin and Doge. Whether Twitter can evolve to compete with the strengthening web3 social landscape or not remains to be seen, watch this space in 2023.
