SARAH, web3earner:  Welcome back to our Meet a Builder interview series. Where I have the privilege of conversing with the talented teams behind your favorite web3 earning projects.   

Today, we’ll be chatting to Rohit Kumar, one of the Co-founders of Orb, the groundbreaking decentralized social media app built on Lens Protocol and the Polygon chain. Orb redefines connectivity, collaboration, and content monetization in the digital age. 

How are you, Rohit?

ROHIT,Orb: I’m good, and thank you for this overwhelming introduction.

SARAH: You are welcome.

SARAH: Can you start us off by explaining what orb is and how it works?

ROHIT: Orb is a decentralized social media application built on Lens Protocol. What’s great about Lens is that you can monetize your content from day one. Unlike platforms like YouTube, where you have to meet certain requirements to advertise, with Orb, you can monetize your content right away. You can also make your digital content monetizable or turn it into an NFT, allowing people to collect and own it. This empowers content creators who want to make money and have control over their creations.

SARAH: I think with the way that social media is going,  I think these things are super important, to empower creators and allow them to monetize what they are producing.

ROHIT: It’s also great that on a decentralized platform like Orb, you own your content and have digital ownership. We don’t own your data.

SARAH: Digital ownership, we love it!

SARAH: How can people earn with Orb?

ROHIT: Recently, we updated our application, and now you can make your digital content monetizable. In our app, there is a digital collectible setting where you can set the price for the collectible and share it with others. You can also split revenue from the content. For example, if you’re a music producer, you can split the revenue between the director, musicians, and others involved in the creation. This is particularly useful for making films, music, or digital assets. Orb allows creators to monetize everything, from music to pictures, videos, and blogs. You can even turn your videos into digital collectibles (NFTs) that people can collect.

SARAH: So is music the the main way that people are monetizing their content at the moment?

ROHIT: No it’s everything from music to pictures to videos to blogs, they are making everything digitally collectible. Now if I post a video, people can collect that as an NFT. It’s good to see that creators are earning more than they would in other web2 platforms.

SARAH: So you’re putting the power back in the hands of the creators.

SARAH: And finally, what are you guys working on to bring more value and create more opportunities for earning in web3?

ROHIT: We are building individual communities for content creators. When someone collects a digital art or collectible on Orb, it becomes an NFT, creating a fan base for the creator. We’re working with communities and onboarding more along the way. Additionally, we are introducing various utilities. For example, music creators can offer courses or sell vinyl records directly within the app, allowing them to connect with their super fans personally.

SARAH: So would you say it’s similar to a token-gated community?

ROHIT:Yes, we are building token gated communities as a way for content creators to earn money and also cater to their audience very personally.

SARAH: That’s really exciting! You’re reshaping web3 social media by empowering creators and introducing new opportunities. Thank you for sharing your insights and what Orb has in store for the future.
