SARAH, web3earner: Welcome back to our Meet a Builder interview series. Where I have the pleasure of talking to the teams behind your favorite web3 earning projects.
Today, we’ll be taking a look behind the scenes of DIMO, an innovative, people-powered movement that’s focused on empowering vehicle owners and revolutionizing the way we drive.

Alex, how are you today?
ALEX, DIMO: I’m doing great, thanks for having me on.
SARAH: Glad to have you here.
SARAH: Can you start us off by giving us an explanation of what DIMO is and how it works?
ALEX: Absolutely, DIMO is a connected vehicle platform for drivers. It means that you can connect your car to the DIMO mobile app and use it as a way to check and monitor the health of your car, things like the battery analytics or the error codes that your car might have. You can also use all that information to book things like maintenance or actually shop for car insurance. All of it is powered by data, and it’s sort of like a combination of a Fitbit, a smart speaker like an Alexa, and an app store for your car.
On the other side, there’s the DIMO developer platform, and many businesses actually want to access that vehicle data in order to offer you as a driver, services and savings. That might be insurance companies that give you discounts for sharing your data. If you can provide a better way for those companies to access data directly from the drivers, we all get better services and applications that make our car ownership experience better.
SARAH: Beautiful. Great explanation.
SARAH: And how can people earn with DIMO?
ALEX: DIMO has a couple of ways to actually earn rewards, and the first is a baseline reward, as we call it. Anyone who connects to DIMO as part of being an early adopter gets to actually access those baseline rewards. Those rewards continue, but they will taper off over time, and all drivers that are connecting their cars share a proportionate amount of those rewards. The much more important way that people earn is actually just through going about their lives as vehicle owners. So, as we bring businesses to the marketplace, whether it’s shopping for maintenance or buying other accessories for your car, exploring services, getting upgrades, all of these businesses that are offering their services in the DIMO ecosystem are offering rewards as well. So, as an owner, it’s sort of like having an airline reward point for your car. When you buy gas, maintenance, or book all these other things, you end up rewarded.
SARAH: People are already doing these things, and you guys are just providing a platform where people get rewarded for the stuff that they’re going to do anyway. I love it.
ALEX: Exactly. And cars are one of the most expensive line items for the people who own them. Basically, after housing, it’s usually number two. So, if you can have a way to earn some rewards on the money you’re already spending and things you’re already doing, we think that’s a great advantage.
SARAH: Agreed, absolutely.
SARAH: Can you give us a recent development within the DIMO ecosystem and what impact will that have for people earning within web3?
ALEX: Recently, we implemented a technology called web3auth. It’s a really cool company, and what they do is they extract away some of the complexities of creating and maintaining a blockchain wallet. We think this is really, really important because one of the key challenges, as most people in the space know, is bringing on mainstream consumers. Yeah, there’s a lot of terminology, there’s a lot of wallet confusion, onboarding is hard. So we introduced this web3-powered wallet, and it actually allows you to go out and tell your friends or your family members about DIMO and say, “Hey, here’s this cool app for your car. It’s going to add a bunch of value in your life” without having to explain something like “here’s your seed phrase and here’s the wallet and here’s how you deal with janky things like WalletConnect.” And for us, this is our vision of where the web3 world goes. It moves the terminology to the background, it puts a great product at the forefront, and puts savings and earning at the forefront, and really allows people who are already excited about this technology to go and bring it to the people who, you know, want a simpler product.
SARAH: Yeah, I love it. Taking that complex, janky process and then just serving it up to the people in a nice little package so that they don’t have to think too hard. It’s just, um, it’s just there for them ready to use. I love it.
Well, thank you for joining me today, Alex. It was great to have you on and learn more about Demo and get a bit of insight into what you guys are building. Great update that you shared. Thank you to all those that have tuned in, and we will see you next time.
ALEX: Thanks so much, Sarah.
